Evaluation

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our media product used the forms and conventions of real hip-hop media products in many effective ways. It uses the same procedure, which a hip-hop media product goes through in all the production stages; pre-production, production and post-production. We used a real media product to base our product on, the song we used was; ‘4 My Town’ by Birdman, Lil Wayne and Drake. We used the original instrumental and the lyrics, but manipulated it to our liking, however we did not change it too much as we wanted to portray the same message and not drift away from the conventions. We also used our previous knowledge of the genre, to help us plan and produce the product. We researched other hip-hop products to make sure we used the proper forms and conventions. After thorough research and our own knowledge we found that it is imperative for the video to include; money, cars, hip-hop style clothing and women. However we could not find women that were willing to take part in the video, but we knew that it was vital to in some way include the female figure so we created silhouettes of women on Adobe Photoshop and incorporated them into the video, but for this to be completely successful we found that we should also silhouette the men, so it does not come across demeaning but at the same time it creates an effect for the video. This also in a way challenged the conventions of a real product as no woman was properly shown. Another way we challenged the conventions was, we used different cultures equally within the product; Black, White and Asian, where in a real hip-hop product it would mostly represent black people. We used a plain white background to make the product look clean, but also as it is used a lot in other videos of this genre. We used many effects such as ‘Brightness and Contrast’, ‘Glint’, ‘Starburst’ and ‘Light Flare’, to create a ‘bling’ effect and make the people shine, as they do in real media products. Also, usually in hip-hop music videos there is no narrative, the rappers just perform to the audience, as they are talking to them, so we did this throughout the video.

Ways in which we developed these forms and conventions?

We developed the forms and conventions of a music video in many different ways. One way we did this was by the shining of the people, although it is used in real media products, we used it to an amount where the glow is obviously shown. Also we used the white background throughout the video, where in real media products there are other backgrounds or clips from other places, using just a white background could make the video seem quite dreary, so we added the silhouettes, wording and other effects to liven it up, so this shows that having a simple video could also be interesting. Adding the silhouettes developed the conventions in a way because it shows that you can show women and buildings in silhouettes and it would still have the same effect and still portray the same message.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary tasks?

The combination of our main product, digipak and website was very effective. The combinations showed that that there was clear branding, as they all displayed the same message, money. The digipak displayed a high class, expensive car, the Aston Martin with the rappers standing in front of it and the other member of the group at the back, this is because the rappers are the main people, so we showed that they are the most important as clearly as possible. The car portrays that we have money and this is a big thing in the hip-hop genre, we properly combined this with the other products as the same car is shown in the video and the website. The characters’ postures were relaxed on the digipak, as the ‘we don’t care’ look much like the album covers, this same message was shown in the music video. The basic colour theme was black, white and red; we chose this theme because it gives quite a dark and ‘gangster’ feel, rather than an amusing and happy look, the theme was also used in the website and the music video. The digipak front cover was also used within the website to so it is easily noticed. The effective combination makes the product look professional and so when the people see the digipak or the website they know straight away which music video it is for.

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

I have learnt a lot from audience feedback. When we were in the research stage, we held a focus group so we can see what type of music video is most appealing to the audience. The audience liked the three different music videos that I displayed because it looks like they are having a good time, so we incorporated this into the video by asking a lot of people to come and dance around to make it look like they are having fun. We also asked the audiences what the elements in the music videos that represent the hip-hop genre were and they said; the clothing, the women and the dancing represent the hip-hop genre so we knew that it was imperative to somehow include all of these elements into the video to follow the conventions of the hip-hop genre. Once we created the music video, we showed friends, family and teachers, to get feedback on what needs to be improved and we got a lot of useful feedback such as there is too many of the same shots which makes it look dull and there are some good effects that need to stay continuous throughout the video. So we used the feedback to re-edit the video and come out with a clean professional looking final product. We did the same with the ancillary tasks, one we created the digipak or the website, we got feedback from friends, family and friends, however we had to re-edit these more than just once for the audience to be satisfied with the final product/s, and for us to come out with the best looking digipak and website. So although we were satisfied with products, the audience bought the best out of us with their constructive criticisms.

How did you use media technologies in the production of your film?

We used media technologies in a number of different ways for the production stage of our film. We used the HD cameras; the greens screen room and the editing suite. The HD cameras gave our video a clean and professional look, also having them on stands also helped as it means that the camera would stay still, but also were able to move it around smoothly without it shaking. We used the green screen room because it gave us a good place to work in, where we would not be disturbed but also because we knew we could use it to our advantage in the pre-production stage by adding a background. The editing suite took us some time to figure out, as there was no teacher properly qualified to teach us, so we had to learn our selves, but once we figured it out it because very useful and easy to use. It gave us the ability to easily press pause, stop and record easily and the footage would save straight onto the system so it would not become a hassle in the later stages. We used ‘Walkie Talkies’ so we could communicate to each other from different rooms, so the person in the editing suite knows when to record/stop, so we would not have to keep running around. We also used the recording studio to record the lyrics for the song, this is because we wanted a high quality sound to go with the HD video, because if it was not it would look rather unprofessional and quite irregular. We used a Blackberry to take a few pictures may have used for the film, but ended up not including them, we knew that the Blackberry would not give a high quality outcome but we decided that it would not matter as we would be manipulating it a lot later on in Adobe Photoshop.

We have gone through the storyboard with our teachers and we have come to a conclusion that it is not up to scratch so we will redo the storyboard and put it up as soon as possible...

DIGIPAK PLAN

There will be four pages for the digipak, the front, the back, the lyrics page and the back of the CD. There will be a theme that will hold for all the pages, which is the top and bottom border, we decided to do this because it makes it look more professional and look solitary. The basic colour theme is black, white and red but there may also be other colours included; we chose this theme because it gives quite a dark and ‘gangster’ feel, rather than an amusing and happy look. The font is not yet as I will experiment with different fonts to get the right one to suit the cover and suit the genre, the sketch is just a random font.

The front cover will have a high class, expensive car with the rappers standing in front of it and the other member of the group at the back, this is because the rappers are the main people, so we can show that they are the most important as clearly as possible. We chose to include a high class car because it portrays that we have money and this is a big thing in the hip-hop genre so we will be following the conventions. The clothing the people will be wearing is t-shirt and baggy jeans because of the stereotype clothing for the hip-hop genre. The characters’ postures will be relaxed, as the ‘we don’t care look’ much like the album covers I analysed. The front cover will also include the name of the song, the name of the group, the logo (which is already made by me, CMB the initials of the group) and a label saying ‘PARENTAL ADVISORY EXPLICIT LYRICS’ because this is included onto every hip-hop album cover so including this would be following the conventions.

The back will be the back of the car and people, so it looks like the audience is looking from the back, this has not got anything to do with the genre, but we just thought that it would look very interesting if we did this.

The lyrics page will be include the main theme of the top and bottom border, with the lyrics in two columns, the colour of the writing will be white because it will stand out in front of the black and red background. We chose to put lyrics in the digipak because it adds a bit of excitement as it lets the audience to sing-a-long. The cover behind the CD will be just the top and bottom border as the CD will be covering so adding a lot of detail would be pointless.

I will experiment with many effects while I am producing the digipak so I can come up with the best looking digipak.

Casting Notes

Our Music Video Is called 4 My Town, it is basically going to be a remake of the original music video created by Birdman featuring Lil wayne and Drake.

There are three main artists in the original music video, but as there are only three in our group I (Shazaib Hussain) have offered to film most of the video while Mark Hornsey and Carlvin Kihura will be performing in most of the music video, but sometimes they will also take turns in filming so I can appear in the music video.

The following people will be in the music video:

Carlvin Kihura

Mark Hornsey

Shazaib Hussain

Ali Hussain

Waqqas Akhtar

Abdul Sesay

Jacob Oakley

Andrew Edwards

Aidan Barefoot

Almost all hip-hop music videos include a lot of people posing in the video so we have informed all of the people above (excluding Mark and Carlvin) that they will be appearing but will not be saying or doing anything just posing for a few shots.

There will be a range of different shots where there will be the extras by themselves and with the main rappers, These shots may be shown more than once and be at different parts of the song.

All the people in the music video have been informed that clothing is to be of stylish wear, any colours are allowed except pink as we feel this would affect the stereotype and theme of the music video. The guys have been told that they need to wear tight t shirts and baggy jeans and being topless may be necessary for some close-ups. Also we have informed that wearing any accessories such as sun glasses, jewellery and anything else that reflects the hip-hop stereotype so we can successfully portray the hip-hop theme.

Treatment

Production of the music
We are doing a remake of the music video originally produced by Birdman, Lil Wayne and Drake ‘4 My Town’. The song will be recorded in the recording studio for the vocals of the song. Only two of people from the group will take part in the vocals which are Mark Hornsey and Carlvin Kihura. We chose to do this because we think that we will get a professional sound. The music will then be edited and put together in Audacity (free audio editor), we used this because it is a free software and we a fairly familiar with it.

Storyboard

This will be undertaken by Mark Hornsey, but he will get input from the rest of the group so we can complete a successful storyboard. Mark will also be directing the video shoot as he will know the most about the storyboard.

Recording the Video:

Mark will be directing most of the shots by looking at the storyboard and will get input from me and Carlvin, if we think something does not work.

I will be the camera man and sometimes Mark and Carlvin will take over so I can take part in the video. When all three of us have to take part in the video we will have to ask a friend to take control of the camera, who will properly be directed by us.

All of the video recording will be done in the green screen room as it three has high quality cameras so it will be easier to insert images, we can produce high quality video footage and we will be able to record from three angles at the same time. Another reason for the green screen room is most hip-hop music videos are recorded there, so we will be following the conventions. However the beginning of our music video may be recorded at another location with a slightly lower quality camera, but until confirmation obtained this will not be used. We will have to try to figure out how to use the green screen room and the editing suite by our selves as it holds complicated professional equipment and there is not a properly qualified teacher that can teach us how to use them, this may consume a lot of time so we will have to be comitted to coming in outside of school hours.

All three of us will be taking part in the video but we will also ask friends to take part in the video as this will relate it to the hip-hop genre, we will ask female friends if it is possible for them to take part in the video, if not we will have to find another way to represent females as it is crucial for the hip-hop genre..

The music video will be edited by myself in Sony Vegas Pro 10 as it has very professional effects and I am very familiar with the software. I will also be getting input from Mark as he has done the storyboard and he will know the where the shots will go. I will also get some input from Carlvin as he will be able to say if something works or not so we can create the best piece of work. We will do a first draft and get opinions from a friends, family and teachers on what needs to be changed, and then recreate it.

Production of the Ancillary Tasks:

The website will be undertaken by Carlvin Kihura; and will be cooperating with me who will be doing the Digipak. We both will need to coordinate with eachother in order to have the same design, we will use the same images and colour theme to create good branding and make it look like they are properly co-ordinated, professional pieces of work.

Focus Group results

I asked a group of fellow classmates a few question for each music video, to get an idea of what sort of video they enjoy and they think is most entertaining, and the results are:

Look What the Cat Dragged in

Q. Who liked this music video and why

Result: they liked this music video because of different reasons, which include; it looks like a party, the scenes outside and the way the dancers are dancing with the beat of the song

Q. In terms of mise-en-scene does it represent the hip-hop genre and how?

Result: They said that it is a typical grime music video and that is that you would usually see.

Q. Was there a narrative in the music video?

Result: They all answered no.

Good Times

Q. Who liked this music video and why?

Result: They liked this music video because it looks like they are having a good time

Q. What elements in the music video represent the hip-hop genre?

Result: They said; the clothing, women and dancing represent the hip-hop genre.

Q. What was eye-catching about the music video?

Result: they replied how hyper the video is, the party atmosphere and the different paces of the video such as the fast motion in the beginning.

You’re a Jerk

Q. what are the good elements of the music video?

Result: they said; it is a fun video, the dancing and the clothing were attractive, which include; the skinny jeans and caps.

Q. Does the clothing represent the hip-hop genre?

Result: they said the top half shows the genre, which include; the baggy T-shirts, chains and caps.

Q. does having one person in the video make it more interesting?

Result: They said it is better than having just one person and the people dancing in the middle of the streets is attractive.

The first two music videos were British and the last is American, which do you enjoy more?

Result: They all agreed that the second music video (Good Times) was the best because it is more appealing and it is more continuous rather than repetitive.

Digipaks

Drake – Thank Me Later

This digipak clearly represents the hip-hop genre because of many different factors, which include; the colour scheme, the text, the mise en scene, his facial expression and the effects.

The colour scheme for this is digipak is black and dark blue, which makes it look quite dark and gloomy; this is used because he does not want the album to look all fun, he wants it to look neutral or serious. The colour scheme shows what type of songs will be inside the album because it usually does; in this case the songs will be serious songs.

The text again shows that it is neutral and he does not want to make it look cool, the text is simple and clear, this is because he wants it to be easy to read and the audience does not have to look at it for more than two seconds without being able to make out what it says.

The text is the opposite of what the hip-hop genre would normally be because it is usually has some kind of design such as graffiti, but this is plain and simple, this is because he obviously wants it look uncomplicated.

The text is in all capitals this again is because he wants the text to be noticeable.

The mise en scene clearly represents the genre because he is wearing stereotypical hip-hop clothing, which include shiny jacket and a baseball cap. Without this it would have been hard to make out that it is a hip-hop album.

The facial expression Drake has is a neutral look; this is because he is again trying to portray the serious effect.

The effect that this album has is a motion blur, this is used because he wanted it to look a bit more exciting, even though he does wants it to be simple, without this effect it would be too simple which would make it look boring, so the effects makes it look a bit better.

Drake – Heartbreak Drake Part 2

This digipak clearly represents the hip-hop genre because of many different factors, which include; the colour scheme, the text, the mise en scene, his facial expression and the effects.

The digipak is the complete opposite of ‘Thank Me Later’ digipak, but they both represent the hip-hop genre.

The colour scheme for this album cover is mixed colours; this is because he wants it to look fun, exciting and attractive. This is opposite to the other digipak because he does not want it to look simple and serious.

This colour scheme shows that the songs inside will be exciting and not serious or boring.

The text on this album cover is not simple or serious it is attractive because it is unaligned, different sized letters, at an angle and has a crack through it, this goes with the title, because the title is ‘Heartbreak Drake’, so these factors show that it is not neat, which represents the hip-hop genre as the hip-hop genre is not neat.

The mise en scene clearly show the hip-hop genre because he has shown nearly every stereotypical hip-hop element on the album cover, these things include; a hoody, baggy jeans, trainers, sun glasses, women in short dresses, a sports car and being on the streets. So it is easily noticeable as a hip-hop album.

The diner in the background shows where Drake is from, which is America because that is where diners are.

His facial expressions are still serious this is because it gives the image a bit of a serious look because if he was smiling it would have looked too happy for the hip-hop genre.

The effect that this digipak has is the high contrast; this makes the image look much more attractive.

The image does not look like an original it looks like a collage, this is what makes it even more attractive.

Website Homepage

Game

The colour scheme this homepage has is black and red, it makes it look quite goury and indicates danger, which is what most rappers try to show, they want people to be afraid of them.

Another reason he uses this colour scheme is because the name of his new album is ‘The RED Album’.

The font on this homepage is mostly just a plain font, this is because he wants the important information to be clear and readable. However the other text such as the title and title to his new album has a graffiti effect, this is again showing the hip-hop genre because graffiti is mostly used by hip-hop listeners.

He makes the most important text that he wants the audience to notice to be bold for example the name of one of his songs, he has made this noticable because it is a new song released on iTunes.

His name is like a brand name, he wants to make his name to be remembered, and be noticed everytime people see it, the same with the name of the album this is why they are both repeated.

The images used are just images of him and the images on the side. The images on the side are very difficult to make out, but it is a design of a bandana; this represents a gang or he is a gang member.

The bandana design is hard to make out because it also has a graffiti effect, this is to show branding because the same effect is used.

He has clear photographs of himself because he wants to show everyone who he is.

Game’s facial exporessions in the two photographs show two different things; the first one shows an angry face and this is because he is again trying to show that people should be scared of him. In the second photograph he is trying to show that he does not care about anything.

J.Cole

This is the official website homepage for the rapper J Cole, his homepage also clearly shows that it is a hip-hop genre because of the colour scheme, font, contents and videos.

The colour scheme on this homepage is just balck and grey, this good because there is not much going and he wants everyone to focus on the important information, images and videos.

The grey makes the audience not look at that part of the website. The colours on the website make it look dull, this represents him as a person because it shows that he does not care about how he looks and he just wants everyone to listen to his music, this is the same as other rappers.

The idea of the font used in this website is the same as Game’s because they both have a plain font on the text that neads to be noticeable and the most important text such as his name and the news headings are big and bold because he wants everyone to notice them.

The website has a music video which is seen as soon as the person enters the website, so this is a good way of trying to show your new music video.

J cole has the new or most important music video in the middle and is quite big and other videos on the side in a smaller size.

The website has a lot of news headings all the way down to the bottom of the website showing his success, this is to show how successful he is to people that have never heard of him. So he gets more people to listen to his music. This is a very clever way of trying to get noticed by new audiences.

The Game and J Cole’s website are very different because Game is trying to promote his new album and J cole is trying to show his success because he is a new rapper. So obviously it depends on what you are trying to portray before you design a website.
